Can I still buy a gas boiler?
As of right now, you can still buy a gas boiler for your home if your existing one needs replacing. However, from 2025 the UK government is bringing in legislation where new build homes will no longer be installed with gas boilers.
Fortunately, this doesn’t mean you’ll need to find a gas boiler replacement before 2025, although it does mean all new housing will be installed with an alternative heating system such as heat pump technology or boilers that run on alternate power sources like as electricity or biomass.
The UK government have advised they will not completely ban the sale of new and replacement natural gas boilers in existing housing until 2035.

Which Is More Efficient?
Heat pumps use a compressor to move heat from one location to another by circulating refrigerant enclosed in pipework, allowing it to extract heat from an outside source. This outdoor heat can originate from a number of sources including the ground, although specifically in the case of the technology used in air conditioning, the heat is drawn from the air itself.
Over the years, boilers that provide heating have become more efficient than ever but still require fuel in order to operate.
Heat pumps rely on electricity to run and while gas is generally cheaper than electricity, the efficiency ratings of heat pumps are much higher than those of gas boilers. Modern gas boilers less than 10 years old typically have an efficiency rating of around 90-94%, which means for every pound spent, up to ten pence is wasted.
In direct comparison, the air conditioners supplied and installed by MAC utilise heat pump technology to achieve an efficiency rating of 300-400%, meaning for every kilowatt of electricity used, three to four times more energy is given. Are Heat Pumps More Expensive Than Gas Boilers?
Purchasing a gas boiler is cheaper than the initial investment of a heat pump system, although the difference in their efficiency does generate a significant saving in a relatively short period of time, as heat pumps offer both a higher efficiency rating and low maintenance costs in comparison.
A new gas boiler installation usually falls within the range of about £3000-£4000 and can usually be completed within two days, whereas a complete heat pump system will likely be closer to £15000 and take up to five days, but that’s where air conditioning comes in.
Air conditioners use air source heat pump technology to provide all the benefits of a heat pump system in terms of efficiency but at a much lower investment starting at £1800 with comparatively quick and easy installation that can be completed in a little as one day.

What Heating Solution is Cheaper to Run?
It is a fact that electricity is more expensive than gas, making it seem as if a gas boiler is a more financially viable option compared to the electrically powered heat pump. Although the gap between the cost of electricity and gas is closing with each passing month. Fortunately, the efficiency ratings for heat pumps running on electricity mean you will end up paying less in the long term than you would with a gas boiler.
For direct comparison, the typical running costs to heat an average 3 bed house with an air conditioner using heat pump technology is around 48p per hour. Whereas the typical running costs to heat an average 3 bed house with a top of the range gas boiler is closer to £2 per hour.
In addition, boilers utilising gas or any other kind of fuel require yearly maintenance to function as effectively as possible and this also applies to heat pumps. Systems that use heat pump technology like air conditioning also need yearly maintenance to maximise their longevity, although this is relatively inexpensive with the newer technology becoming more commonplace and accessible. Unfortunately this is not quite the case with gas boilers, as both repair and maintenance costs will start to increase exponentially once their installations across the UK begin scaling back from 2025.
