Gas Boiler

As you might have heard, a proposed ban on gas boilers is set to begin in 2025. In their bid to tackle climate change and reach net-zero emissions by 2050, the UK government is cutting down on the amount of greenhouse gasses emitted into the environment. But what exactly does this mean for you? Whether you already have a gas boiler in place, are looking to purchase a new home or redevelop an existing property, this blog will break down some of the key pieces of information you’ll likely need to know.

Gas Boiler Ban: Why Are Gas Boilers Being Phased Out?

When we burn natural gasses, as we do when heating our homes with gas boilers, carbon dioxide (CO2) is released into the atmosphere. CO2 is one of the significant contributors to global warming alongside methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O). There is a growing focus amongst governments worldwide and various international organisations to reduce these emissions and limit global temperature increases. This is already being implemented across many sectors including driving and transportation with the introduction of clean air zones in cities across the UK. The phasing out of gas boilers is just another step in achieving this.

Gas Boiler Replacement: What Will Replace Gas Boilers?

Heating and Air Conditioning Units

Heating and air conditioning units or heat pumps as they are otherwise known, work by transferring heat from the air, or ground, into your home. A key feature of these systems is that they have both heating and cooling modes, making them ideal for year-round comfort. Not only do they produce minimal greenhouse gasses when compared to gas boilers, but they are also much more energy efficient than traditional heating systems, reducing your energy bills.

Electrical Heating Solutions

Electrical heating solutions refer to any heating system that converts electrical energy into heat to warm your home. This includes electric radiators, infrared heaters and underflooring heating to name a few. Again, electrical heating solutions are more energy efficient than gas boilers, contributing to fewer emissions.

UK Gas Boiler Ban: When Will They Be Phased Out?

So, you might be asking yourself ‘When are gas boilers being phased out?’ To answer your question, it was announced that phase one would begin in 2025, but this is not a hard and fast deadline. Specific policies and timelines can change over time as governments reassess their climate goals and strategies. This will also depend on your property and whether you live in a new build house or not.

New Build Homes

Phase one of the proposed gas boiler ban only concerns new build homes from 2025 and onwards. Such homes will not come with pre-installed gas boilers, instead, they will have alternative forms of heating solutions like heat pumps and electrical heating systems.

Homes Built Before 2025

If your home was built before 2025 this doesn’t mean you need to replace your gas boiler immediately. The government are introducing initiatives to encourage homeowners to transition to cleaner heating systems, including government-funded schemes and gas boiler replacement grants. Homeowners can receive payments up to £5,000 to go towards the cost of replacing their gas boilers.

However, phase two which is proposed for 2035 aims to phase out all installations of gas boilers, new build or not. This means that if your boiler stops working after this point, gas boiler suppliers will no longer be able to provide you with a new one. This will need to be replaced with a new, cleaner alternative.
